[S1 E42] Scary or Not: to weigh or not to weigh? Let's talk about the scale. Pro tips included!

As we dive into the season of pumpkin spice lattes, haunted houses, and elaborate costume planning, there's one thing that can be eerier than a ghostly encounter in a creaky old mansion – and that's stepping on the scale.

As we all know, the scale can be a powerful influence from a young age, especially on females. But it's time we prioritize our mental and physical well-being over appearances. So, join me today as I share my personal experiences with body image and societal influences, highlighting the need for self-reflection. We'll also discuss the impact of genetics, metabolism, and other factors on weight and dive deep into the flaws of relying solely on the Body Mass Index (BMI).

The scale isn't the ultimate measure of health, and in this episode, I'll offer alternative markers to consider, help you interpret the numbers on the scale properly, and suggest a professional approach to using it.

So, let's take a deep dive into understanding the complexities of weight and break free from the unhealthy obsession with being "skinny." It's time to embrace a healthier viewpoint on weight and make choices that support our mental and physical well-being.

In today’s episode, we cover:

  • [00:01:34] Why this is one of the most important episodes for all females to hear

Quotes:

It's very important to kind of sit back and reflect on where you learned your mentality around the scale and how you treat it because a lot of times we just adopt it from our mothers.

A lot of the time this conversation was never had, which is why I'm having this conversation with you and I'm hoping that it can influence you to better understand yourself, have a little bit more grace with yourself, and utilize the scale in a different way.

We almost all have been programmed to give ourselves little rewards mentally, and when we see the scale lower than the previous time, weigh ourselves.

Your weight is just your gravitational pull on Earth and we can interpret the data differently to better understand what the weight means.

You can absolutely prevent obesity for yourself by lifestyle because lifestyle is what kind of pulls the trigger.

BMI is BS.

Body fat percentage is actually my go-to marker when we're tracking for optimal health.

High school is great and all, but that was a different you. You're in a different chapter. We have to keep moving forward for our best physique and body.

Choosing how to use your scale and what the scale is providing you before you use it is really important because maybe you don't actually need to track your weight. Maybe you should track better markers of your health such as your grip strength, your body fat percentage, lean muscle mass, fasting blood glucose, resting heart rate, blood pressure, HRV, single leg balance, and more.

Weight is not directly proportionate to your health and it's definitely not directly proportionate to your value.

The scale has nothing to do with who you are, your value as a human, and more than that, your character and how awesome you are.
